New York City plans to host a megaconcert in Central Park in August to celebrate the Big Apple’s reopening. The concert will be produced by Clive Davis, an 89-year-old music-industry legend. It will be a three-hour extravaganza with eight as-of-yet unnamed stars with an audience of 60,000.
As of Monday morning, the world has recorded over 174.1 million Covid-19 cases and has seen more than 3.74 million deaths, according to Worldometer, a service that tracks such information. In addition, over 157.1 million people worldwide have recovered from the virus.
Since the start of vaccinations at the end of last year, over 2.15 billion doses have been administered across the globe as of Monday morning, the equivalent of over 27.2 doses for every 100 people.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that, as of Monday, 170.8 million people in the United States –or 51.5% –have received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine. Of that population, 41.9%, or 138.9 million people, are fully vaccinated, bringing the total number of doses dispensed in the United States to over 301 million. Breaking this down further, approximately 63.5% of the population over the age of 18 –or 163.0 million people – has received at least a first inoculation and 52.8% of the same group –or 136.2 million people – is fully vaccinated.
In an effort to encourage people to get vaccinated, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease specialist, and First Lady Jill Biden visited a vaccination center at an historic Harlem church Sunday. The Abyssinian Baptist Church opened a vaccination site in its basement in January.
The first major cruise ship to set sail from North America in over a year did so this weekend. Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Millennium departed Philipsburg, St. Maarten at 10:30 on Saturday. “Today, we sail, again!” said Lisa Lutoff-Perlo, the cruise line’s CEO, adding that it was “such a significant moment for our company, our industry and the Caribbean.” In order to sail in U.S. waters, the ship attested to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention „that 95% of crew (excluding any newly embarking crew in quarantine) are fully vaccinated and submit to CDC a clear and specific vaccination plan and timeline to limit cruise ship sailings to 95% of passengers who have been verified by the cruise ship operator as fully vaccinated prior to sailing.“
Germany’s vaccination campaign is picking up steam. The Bundesrepublik has administered 55 million doses, said Bundesgesundheitsminister Jens Spahn in a tweet. Almost 46% of the population has received at least one dose and 21.3% have received two. The government is now opening up vaccinations to all age groups and professions and children age 12 and up are now eligible to receive the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.
Officials in India announced they would provide free coronavirus vaccinations to all adults 18 years of age and older. “From Monday, June 21st, across every state of the country, for all citizens above the age of 18, the Government of India will provide free vaccines,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a statement.
